Ultimately, many researchers aim to apply their techniques to real dialog systems serving real users. Many real dialog systems are present in industry, however it can sometimes be difficult for researchers to make connections with industry. Here are three resources which can help researchers connect with practitioners in industry:
- Association for Voice Interaction Design (AVIxD): AVIxD is a relatively new professional organization for voice user interface design practitioners. For the past three years they have run a workshop in which participants tackle issues such as "The Maturation of the VUI", "VUI Design as A Profession", and "Customization: How Does Your App Adapt?". The group then writes position papers documenting the group's findings. The organizers of the most recent workshop wrote up their experiences in this article.
- Voice User Interface Designers (VUIDs) mailing list: This is an active mailing list of voice user interface design professionals, primarily in industry. The organizers have described their community in this article.
- Applied Voice Input/Output Society (AVIOS): AVIOS is a world-wide community of speech professionals. AVIOS sponsors an annual conference, and also has chapters with regular meetings in many locations in the USA and elsewhere in the world. AVIOS also sponsors an annual student application contest, which the organizers have described in this article.
